Signs your spring is broken

  • A loud bang from the garage, then the door won’t open
  • You can see a gap in the coil of the spring above the door
  • The door feels too heavy to lift by hand
  • The opener hums or strains and the door lifts only a few inches
  • The door slams down fast instead of closing slowly
  • The door sits crooked or one cable looks slack
Don’t use the opener or lift the door

With a broken spring, the opener or your back is taking the full weight of the door. That can burn out the opener or drop the door. Leave it closed if you can and call us.

What spring replacement includes

  • Replace the broken spring with one sized for your door
  • Balance the door so it lifts smoothly and stays where you leave it
  • Check the cables, drums, rollers and hinges for wear
  • Lubricate moving parts and test the opener and safety sensors

Springs usually wear out at about the same rate, so if your door has two springs and one has broken, we’ll talk you through whether replacing both makes sense.

“Really good and honest service by Arshad. Professional and knows what he is doing.

He came to replace the springs, also helped align the door and replace a sensor at no additional cost. Did whatever was needed to get the door going even if it wasn’t originally part of the scope.”

“I had an emergency with my garage door, it was hanging completely crooked, the wheels were popping out of the tracks, and eventually, both lifting cables completely unspooled, leaving the heavy door stuck open. I reached out to Arshad, and he was fantastic. He safely handled the dead weight of the door, reset the cables, and got the entire system rebalanced perfectly. He was highly skilled, quick, and charged a very fair price for a difficult job. Highly recommend Arshad for any garage door repairs!”

“What really stood out was how they went above and beyond: they checked the entire door balance, lubricated all moving parts, tested the safety sensors thoroughly, and gave me some great tips on maintenance to prevent future issues. No pressure, just genuine helpful service.

The price was fair, the work was clean, and my garage door has never operated better quiet, fast, and fully smart-connected again. If you’re in the Toronto area and need garage door repair (especially smart openers), I highly recommend HH Brothers. They’re reliable, skilled, and truly customer-focused. I’ll definitely call them again if anything comes up! Thanks, HH Brothers you guys rock”

FAQ

Common questions

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?

The most common signs are a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the spring coil, a door that feels too heavy to lift, or an opener that strains and lifts the door only a few inches.

Can I open the door with a broken spring?

It’s best not to. The spring carries most of the door’s weight. Without it the door is too heavy to hold and can drop suddenly, and running the opener can damage it. Leave the door closed and call us.

Should both springs be replaced at the same time?

Often, yes. Springs on the same door are usually the same age and wear out together. We’ll look at the door and tell you what makes sense before doing any work.

How much does spring replacement cost?

It depends on the door’s size, weight and spring type. Call 416-887-8200 and we’ll give you a free estimate.
